I got up nice a early this morning to run a fuse cycle in my nice new shiny kiln! So i started by priming my shelf, i have bullseye shelf primer so mixed it as per instructions (1 part primer to 4/5 parts water to consistency of single cream) brushed on my 5 or so layer with my haik brush. Programmed my kiln to run at full to 260 and hold for 20 mins (as it says to do on the bullseye website) put in the shelf and left it to run. Came back to it after the 20 mins had a peek through the bead door and, oh no!  :(

My primer had all cracked and flaked!

Pics courtesy of my iphone so they may not be great, sorry

Help! What did i do wrong?  :(

flame n fuse

Not sure really, but it looks like quite a thick bubbly layer and I'm surprised it's so pink after drying (mine goes white, but is a tub which is several years old so might be a different formula). Were you running your kiln at 260C or F?

SilverGems89

it said on the bullseye website it would stay pink until fired up higher (here's a link to the instructions http://www.bullseyeglass.com/images/stories/bullseye/PDF/other_technical/bullseye_shelf_primer_instructions.pdf)

Do you think it was too thick then?

and it was 260c as per the instructions

Can't advise on colour as I use batt wash but looks to thick to me. Does it have to be kiln dried? Can't you air dry it somewhere?

SilverGems89

they don't say you cant air dry it but they don't recommend it...
I have order some thinfire for now anyway  :)

The only reason they don't specifically recommend air dry is because most people are too impatient to wait for that to happen and want to use it quickly!

Absolutely fine to air dry, I have five shelves altogether (well, I broke two the other week, so three now) but every so often if it's quiet time, I clean them all off, coat them all so they have time to dry naturally.  It really is fine to do so.

It looks way too thick to me Gemma.

Might be worth, when you scrape it all off, giving it a quick rub down with sandpaper or a green pan scrubber to key the surface a bit more too.

I was going to say it looks too thick Gemma, when I've done mine in the past it looks a very pale pink when its dry, but to be honest I've only ever bought one lot of shelf wash so it may have just been the batch.

Too thick Gem, I did exactly the same thing, water it down, scrape that off and coat it again and you will be good to go ;)

Thanks everyone, will have another go later, much thinner  ;D
