Should you try refusing a piece?

That happened to me before I started to cut a slightly larger layer for the top.

I tried grinding the sides and re-fusing twice - one time it worked fine on the shape but it did leave very fine lines along the side where it had been ground - the second time I used a finer grinding bit and washed the glass thoroughly before re-fusing and that seemed to do the trick.
