Just wondering if anyone knows how to use a cabachon mandrel

never used one myself but i think lorna demonstated on one at julies ??.......could be wrong but wasnt that the thing she did the 'twirl it ' and the glass will flow to the edges'.. ??

Okay here's what i do....

1) get your mandrel really really hot while you are getting a really good sized gather of glass on the end of your rod.

2) Let the gather drip onto the little bobbly sticky up thing on the mandrel (oooay technical terms here lol!)

3) then build up your glass ontop of that blob kinda like a mr whippy 

4) when you have a good amount on get all the glass really hot so it starts to move freely but not too runny

5) take the mandrel out of the flame and with the mandrel completely vertical gently spin backwards and forwards between your thumb and forefinger, this will displace the glass evenly into a lovely round cab (in theory!!)

Aha, that's what I've been doing wrong - I've been pressing and marvering to try to get a nice shape. I will try some twirling from now on...
