i used silver for the first time today and while a side of the bead showed the silver effect after encasing with a transparent colour, i got a dull almost grey-like effect on the edges of the bead. anyone know why this is happening? + some of my beads have sharp edges and i dunno why... :(

A picture might help  ;)
Could be a number of things, base glass, or glasses....did you use different glasses in the bead? Also, using a reduction flame to stick the silver, then rubbing it quite firmly on a marver helps.
Did your foil overlap itself..could there have been a double layer that stayed more silver?

The way you describe it I think that the edges might not have been encased. So the silver came to the surface and was burnt there. Silverfoil around the beadholes might also cause the sharp edges. So I would recommend you encase the whole bead, also the edges.
