1.  Everyone has given all the advice that I would give already.  My only input would be that I hold the rod at about a 45 degree angle pointing down and pull that way so the hottest part is always the higher end.  Wow, does that make sense outside of my head?!  To make thicker stringers I heat up the middle of a rod into a BIG gather and pull slowly.  Instant punties!
