Title: Sharp Bits!!
Post by: Fired Silver on June 15, 2007, 11:32:02 PM
Hi

I have fused some pieces today and some of them have sharp pointy corners?!  Never had this before, does anyone know why this happens?

Thanks

Rebecca

Hi Rebecca

I think you get sharp bits if you fire a piece for too long. Did you do a longer soak than usual or fire smaller pieces or use a different type of glass?

You can grind the sharp bits off & then fire polish the piece to put things right.

OO I used to get sharp bits when I first started....is it the corners curling up or little pointy bits on the edges?

I got some pointy bits on a little pair of cufflinks I made for fathers day. There was quite a bit in the kiln on this run and it was the only thing that went like that. There was also pieces the same size that came out fine.

They did have a dichroic layer, could it have been that?

Little pointy bits on the corners!  Have used the grinder to get rid of them, but didn't know why it had happened as I've never had it before!!

What kind of glass were you fusing, I had this a lot with window glass and some stained glass...I also had a line or a join where the pieces were stacked on each other.....I think its either a coating on the glass..or holding it too long...the only thing I found was to grind them off and polish

The other edges were fine, nice and smooth, just two of the corners were pointed - I was making small nuggets, about 8-9mm.  Sorry - camera is on the blink!!

I'm using bullseye.  I've used the grinder on a couple, but I'm a PMC user, so the pieces that I wanted to use with PMC will have the pointy bits buried in the silver!!  Shh don't tell anyone!
